SANTA MONICA: Four days into deliberations, jurors in the O.J. Simpson civil trial had to start all over again after Judge Hiroshi Fujisaki dismissed one juror for failure to disclose critical information. The 60-year-old woman, the only African-American on the jury, had not told attorneys during jury selection that her daughter was employed as a legal secretary at the Los Angeles District attorney's office, which prosecuted Simpson during his criminal trial. Her replacement, an Asian-American computer programmer, joins a jury that probably won't deliver a verdict any time soon. After spending 14 hours over...

...entire Tanglewood Festival Chorus, directed by John Oliver; the PALS (Performing Artists at Lincoln School) Children's Choir, directed by Johanna Hill Simpson, and organist James David Christie joined in the Te Deum for a sweeping, magnificent performance. Mr. Christie's skillful organ playing added a lovely tone to the entire work. The children's choir was adorable, and sang with great enthusiasm. Overall, this was an excellent concert, and kudos go to all musicians involved in bringing Berlioz's music to life...

SANTA MONICA, Calif.: After four and a half mind-numbing days of accusation and counter-accusation, summations in the O.J. Simpson civil trial ended Tuesday, leaving a weary jury to sift through a tangled evidence pile of hair fibers, bloody gloves and Bruno Magli shoes. Unlike the rules of a criminal trial, where any reasonable doubt precludes jurors from finding a defendant guilty, in the civil trial jurors can find Simpson guilty if they decide that he probably murdered his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her companion, Ronald Goldman. Only nine of the 12 jurors need agree...

...ultimate issues of love and loss, rage and separation--have moved from the sound stages onto the streets. Beginning with the taped beating of Rodney King in 1991 (by far the most important footage to come out of L.A.'s image factory that year) and continuing through the O.J. Simpson trials and all their multifarious spin-offs, the facts of life in Southern California have loomed far larger in the American psyche and stirred more controversy and conversation than any of its technicolor fictions...

...stash. But the real story is of the runaround Spoon and Stretch get from social-service employees, who can't be bothered to help addicts get into rehab programs. This is an action comedy about two guys waiting in line for nothing to happen: Samuel Beckett rewritten for Simpson-Bruckheimer. Part of the joke here is that Spoon and Stretch, who are less performance artists than petty criminals, suffer from welfare-state dependency. And, in Michigan, this is the wrong state to depend on. Public servants are ignorant or lazy or just plain crazy."The film's villains are from...
