...owners still follow black shoppers in fear that they will be shoplifted. What is the purpose of affirmative action if black people think they are locked out of a racist job market? And why is it that white people and black people still look at the verdict in the Simpson murder trial as if they lived on two different planets? The Civil Rights movement has not failed in its mission to give more opportunities in life to black people, but it has failed in its attempt to eradicate racial perceptions, one of its central purposes...
...Simpson wants his Calvin Klein underwear back. He also wants the garage door opener, golf shoes and other items that police seized from his Ford Bronco. According to documents filed Monday by Simpson attorney Carl Douglas, the former football star got his passport and Hall of Fame ring back after he was acquitted of murder, but prosecutors have refused to return anything else. Among them: the famous handgun, fake beard and mustache; two cassettes ("Too Funky" and "Frank Sinatra Duets"); various membership cards (Hertz, West Hills Country Club, Blockbuster Video and a "Hooters VIP" card) and $3.93 in change...
...WEALTH HELPED O.J. SIMPson secure an acquittal in his criminal trial. Now his riches have become a target for those seeking both vengeance and catharsis. Simpson faces two lawsuits stemming from the double murder, one filed by the parents of murder victim Ron Goldman, Fred Goldman and Sharon Rufo (the two are divorced but have now joined their suits); and another on behalf of Nicole Brown's estate (Louis Brown, father of the slain Nicole, is the estate's executor). Depositions in the Goldman suit were to have started this week but were postponed until Oct. 30 after Simpson hired...

New York University Law professor Stephen Gillers predicts Simpson will give the Browns custody of his children if they agree to drop their suit and allow generous visitation. The Goldmans have no such incentive to settle. If either case goes to trial, it will be held in mostly white Santa Monica, California. The standard of proof is lower in civil cases--the jury assesses guilt or innocence based on a "preponderance of the evidence" rather than "reasonable doubt." A verdict requires only nine of 12 jurors, not unanimity. Also, says Gillers...
Just hours before he was scheduled to be questioned by NBC's Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric, O.J. Simpson pulled out of a one-hour, no-holds-barred TV interview, the buildup for which had attracted nationwide curiosity as well as furor. The reason for Simpson's balk: his lawyers told him his answers might complicate his defense in the civil suits brought by the Brown and Goldman families. Simpson followed his NBC no-show with a phone call to the New York Times to declare, "I am an innocent man." Simpson also told the paper that he had been...
