...three most uncomfortable men in America last Tuesday night. Like his counterparts at ABC and CBS, he had to vamp on the air as two bizarrely incompatible events prepared to collide: President Clinton's State of the Union speech and a verdict in the O.J. Simpson civil trial. In Brokaw's earpiece, frantic conversations were taking place between NBC News executives in New York City and the producer on duty in Washington, with Brokaw chiming in whenever he got a few seconds off the air. "It was an American cultural meltdown," he says. "There were no rules you could turn...
...beautiful? Aren't they beautiful?" Daniel Petrocelli repeated the words in the "clean room" as he stared at the 30 different pictures that had just emerged from a FedEx package and were spread out on an oval table. It was the middle of the Christmas recess in the O.J. Simpson civil trial, and the lead lawyer for the plaintiffs was admiring a present. There, shown 30 times over on Simpson's feet, was what the attorneys would argue was a pair of rare size-12 Bruno Magli shoes, the Lorenzo model, with the distinctive stitching, seams and design...

SANTA MONICA, Calif: Fred Goldman wasn't kidding when he said the O.J. civil trial wasn't about the money. While speaking on a Christian radio talk show today, the aggrieved father said he would renounce his claim to the damages Simpson has been ordered to pay his family if the former football star issues a signed, detailed confession that he killed Ronald Goldman. Steering clear of directly naming Simpson as the culprit, Goldman said, "The suggestion is that if the person . . . that murdered my son wants to write out a complete confession and publish it in newspapers around...
SANTA MONICA, California: Jurors ordered O.J. Simpson to pay $25 million in punitive damages, $12.5 million each to the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Coupled with the $8.5 million in compensatory damages awarded Tuesday, the decision pushes Simpson's potential financial obligation to a whopping $33.5 million. That's significantly more than the $15.7 million the plaintiffs had asked for, and left Simpson lawyers swearing that there was no way their client could ever pay up. Whether or not he does will first depend on Judge Hiroshi Fujisaki, who has 110 days to approve or reduce...
