...some sensational set pieces: a barber-shop murder in the first few minutes, and a long, brutal fight in a bathhouse between Mortensen and two thugs; they're armed, he's naked. But at heart it's a two-family drama, one being Anna's sensible English aunt (Sinead Cusack) and crabby Russian uncle (Jerzy Skolimowski), the other Semyon and his son Kirill (Vincent Cassel). Kirill is like a mutant Corleone: he has Sonny's hair-trigger impulses and Fredo's drug-addled weak streak, stemming from a need to be respected by his father and from Kirill's realization...
...than the atrocities visited on them. There's nearly always a tendency in movies about revolutions to glamorize and ennoble the oppressed but that's not the purport of this film. We get to know the revolutionaries - there's a sweetly tentative romance between Damien and a woman named Sinead (Orla Fitzgerald) that is the more touching because it so gently stated - and we like them in part because they are reluctant warriors, particularly when they must dispense with their own countrymen, who lack their righteous fervor. ...Passion of the Christ: The suspense in this film could be cut. With a knife. Any sane viewer of Mel Gibson’s neo-noir thriller will be on the edge of their seat from the moment the Sinead O’Connor-esque Satan figure appears. Will Jesus die? The answer to this question requires two hours of scary, seat-jumping sequences that will leave you disturbed for days. It’s hard to know where to begin with the scares in The Passion—but highlights include 2000 year-old stereotypes about Jews and visuals...
