...also rehearsed spectacles that were part of a careful plan laid down by autocratic President Ferdinand Marcos and his powerful First Lady Imelda, who had much to gain from a festive association with John Paul. Everywhere, as if on cue, Filipinos were on hand to enact earnest welcoming playlets, sing, dance or pose as "tribesmen" in outdated garb. During one motorcade, a phalanx of trained water buffalo knelt in reverence just as the pontifical car swept by, while at another point a beaming bride and groom in a mock wedding paused in mid-ceremony to wave to the Pope from...

...with an old Basque fighting song. It took security guards ten minutes to subdue the demonstrators in an unseemly scene that was carried over national television. Clearly prepared for the outbreak, a composed Juan Carlos turned it to advantage. At one point he smiled mischievously, goading the protesters to sing louder. Then, with order restored, he took command with an eloquent gesture of national reconciliation. "Faced with those who practice intolerance of free expression, I reaffirm my faith in democracy and confidence in the Basque people," he told the cheering audience, and went on to legitimize nonviolent Basque nationalism...

In one week on the latest tour Tenor...

...this joy is infectious, and, combined with their refined style often makes for superb concerts. A cappella singing is an acquired taste, but the Kroks' impeccable song selection (mostly Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Richard Rodgers stories of love and destruction), pleasing harmonies and prissily risque patter, all in the sensuous acoustics of Sanders create an enticing package. The Kroks don't just sing, they perform, with that Preppie obsession about sex used occasionally to roaring success, and never, in my experience, to disappointment...
