...this heady millet brew, which would have remained virtually unknown outside this remote area if it wasn't for the occasional mention in guidebooks. But tongba is like Guinness to the Irish or whisky to the Scots: it's something to celebrate and revel in, and to stumble and sing under its influence...
...mother, Vikki, works at the front desk. Now 11, Maddison explained how she'd just auditioned at a big dance school. It had been nerve-racking, she said, having to perform ballet and a jazz routine in front of the examiners and other kids; she'd even had to sing Happy Birthday. She didn't make it into the school, but the point for her was that she'd tried, and driving home afterward Vikki choked up when Maddison told her, "You know, I'm so proud of myself...
...Mountain Goats’ lyrics have always been their strong point, making up for the fact that the singer can’t sing or play guitar very well. From there I started getting into producing: twice for DHO and once for HRDC (Into the Woods). While I absolutely love opera, I cannot sing at all, so producing was the best way for me to involve myself and be as close as I could to the actual performances without being on stage. I am also a broadcaster for WHRB and have an opera show Sunday nights every other week. I was in wind ensemble...
