...Monk and her company in performance would disagree. She rejects the traditional titles of "singer," "dancer," "choreographer" and "composer" and lets her work suggest its own categorization as it (and she) leaps from dance to poetry to extended vocal technique, an emotionally charged form of singing expressed using only singular sounds, and no words...
...into the whiny piece that the opening chapters promise it will be. Murakami salvages a passable story out of what seems to be headed straight for crash-and-burn. Ultimately it's a book about love--a unique book in that the love with which it deals is fairly singular. The book doesn't seem to be trying to expose some broad message or preach anything to us. ...council is to propose the referendum again, it will need to do a much better job in the publicity department. Although it is difficult to pinpoint a singular explanation for last week's abysmal voter turnout, voter apathy, as some council members have pointed out, cannot be used as a primary excuse. The sound track for the movie Life is refreshing because it reflects a singular vision. Although the album features artists ranging from R. and B./hip-hop diva Mya to country singer Trisha Yearwood, virtually all the songs were written by one performer, R. Kelly. Life lacks the inventive brilliance of, say, Prince's 1989 Batman sound track, but it is a consistently pleasant album. And it's worth listening to if only for the title song...
