Rebellion in Sinlciang. The degree of Russian control over the borderlands varied through the following decades. During the 1930s, the Soviet Union's in fluence grew steadily in the far-west Chinese province of Sinkiang, at a time when China's Nationalist government was distracted by the invading Japanese in the east.
