...cardinal sin involved is not just greed. It is also sloth. Congressional officials estimate there could be tens of thousands of bills awaiting attention, some of them dating back more than 30 years. Hubris is another problem. Responsible for policing themselves, legislators have gone easy on those involved in alleged wrongdoing and acquitted many of those accused of involvement in the scandals. Avarice is rife: faced with better offers, 194 deputies swapped parties during the last session and 14 of the new batch have switched their affiliation before even taking office. The problem for Lula and Brazil is that changing...

...being too moderate on the war for an antiwar primary electorate and going so far in mollifying that electorate as to weaken her chances in the general election. Like Muskie, a Humphrey backer in 1968, and Kerry, an Iraq-war authorizer in 2002, she's saddled with the original sin of being an original war supporter. The Crimson (14-3-1, 11-2-0 ECAC) eventually finished an unblemished weekend by defeating Quinnipiac...

...always enjoyed inordinately privileged status on most large campuses. To their credit, the programs galvanize a school's sense of community and, in cases like Bryant's, often showcase coaches as exemplary teachers who burnish instead of blemish a school's academic aura. But that's precisely the sin of Alabama and other schools: by morphing the college coach from Knute Rockne into Jack Welch, they're once and for all admitting that when it comes to building their self-esteem as institutions of higher learning, football is the sine qua non instead of the complement...
