...another hour or so, the network recapped returning series, introduced the cute-teen-girl-and-dad sitcom "One on One," gave us a couple "Iron Chef" specials with William Shatner (which will test if one can literally OD on camp) and finished with "Manhunt," a reality show where people are hunted "WWF-style" with paintballs. (If the ratings fall, we go to blowdarts!) Then it was time for what everyone was waiting for: "Star Trek: Enterprise," the new Trek prequel that takes place a hundred years from now and a hundred before the first series, at the dawn of space...
...Ellen DeGeneres (a talented woman who made a sitcom that was funny for half a season yet, owing to a well-timed coming out, is now treated like Lucille Ball rather than, say, Brett Butler) returns to TV comedy in "The Ellen Show." She plays a businesswoman who leaves the big city to move back to her hometown (the show's been in development since before last season, which explains the homeward-bound premise, all the rage a year ago). Yep, she's gay in this one too - which makes the premise darn convenient, then, since folks who pick...
...network borrowing something it thinks is hip from cable; in the real world, Lagasse's moment of edgy cult stardom peaked several years ago, around the time he got his live show and a Vegas restaurant and became some kind of human amusement-park attraction. This week, the emphasis will be on sitcoms and dramas, but with reality shows ready to be thrown in as soon as those series fail. Meanwhile, the first murmurs we're hearing about network schedules have sitcom and drama vehicles in the works for Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen DeGeneres, Jason Alexander and on NBC - and I only wish...
Whether they turn it into a sex-farce sitcom for seniors or a Hallmark Hall of Fame special, the romance between SUZANNE PLESHETTE and TOM POSTON seems ripe for the CBS development department. Pleshette, 64, who played BOB NEWHART's wife on The Bob Newhart Show, and Poston, 79, who played Newhart's handyman on Newhart, are getting married 30 years after they first met. Newhart couldn't be happier. "Not too long ago, Suzy lost her husband, and Tom lost his wife," says Newhart. "I would see Tom on a fairly regular basis, and he was just a fish...
