...Viking Project Manager James S. Martin Jr. sounded plaintive last week, there was good reason. After studying photographs and radar scans of Viking's first alternative landing site on Mars' Chryse Planitia, the Plains of Chryse, he scrubbed a landing scheduled for July 17 and started studying a new site for a touchdown that could not take place until next week at the earliest. The postponement, following last month's decision to cancel Viking's scheduled July 4 landing, raised concern among scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mission Control Center; it further reduced...
Close Look. Earlier in the week scientists had been reasonably confident that the first alternative site, about 500 miles northwest of the original touchdown area, would prove safe for landing. Pictures from Viking's camera -which can "see" details down to the size of a football field each time the orbiter swoops to within 1,000 miles of Chryse-showed what seemed to be a relatively smooth area between two heavily cratered strips. It appeared to be less hazardous than the original site, which is crisscrossed by crevasses and steep escarpments that could swallow the lander or cause...
...only can the international caliber of this year's Open trace its origins to that solemn declaration of 1861, but it was further in keeping with the Open's oldest traditions that the site for this year's contest was Royal Birkdale...
There were some worthy suggestions made, however, One came from William Petri, a research fellow in Biology, who warned the council not to cripple the research, but to take it to an area that is not so crowded. Other worthy suggestions include confining the research to one site, at least for the time being. People interested in conducting the research could receive leaves of absence to work at the site, as the Harvard physicists interested in working with high energy accelerators...
...security branch of the federal police. At least 18 people were killed and many more were reported missing in the rubble; 66 were wounded, eleven of them critically. The following day, eight bullet-riddled bodies were found in a parking lot a few blocks from the blast site. The deaths pushed the tally of fatalities resulting from political violence to nearly 450 in the three months since the junta took over. Of those, more than 70 have been policemen. An unknown number of other people have either been kidnaped by terrorists or arrested by security forces and held incommunicado...
