...columnists in the country attacked the mini-series for playing fast and loose with recent political fact. Then the same network aired a so-called docudrama, The Trial of Lee Harvey Oswald, to even harsher criticism. Now NBC and CBS are getting ready to take their lumps. King, a six-hour miniseries consecrated to the life and times of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., has already been assailed by King's second in command, the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, for overstating the role of a white adviser during King's crusades. CBS's new three-hour account...

...film's plot isn't helped any by the loss of two hours from the original six-hour film. The version now showing here leaves a great many gaps, and it's impossible to tell whether Bertolucci meant to leave details vague or whether they were cut for the U.S. market. It is never clear, for instance, why De Niro's insane cousin loves him, or why she and her fascist lover become so perversely destructive; nor is it completely clear why De Niro stands by as the fascists take control of his town...

Just trying to explain the plot of Gondollers, this season's Gilbert and Sullivan production, might have passed the time on that six-hour car trip to New York last weekend better than playing Botticelli. Gondoliers begins simply enough: two Venetian gondolier brothers fall in love with and marry two peasant girls. But then the trouble starts. One of these brothers turns out to be the long-lost king of Barataria, but good Venetian egalitarians that they are, neither of the supposed brothers wants to be the ruler or knows which actually is. All of which gives them good...

During an earlier stop in Lusaka, Zambia, Owen and Young discussed the plan with Patriotic Front Leaders Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe. In Pretoria, they underwent what one observer described as a six-hour "interrogation" by South African Prime Minister John Vorster. The proposal that most troubled Vorster: the disbanding of the Rhodesian army and establishment of a U.N. peace-keeping force. Vorster declared: "The Rhodesian question is a matter for whites and blacks in Rhodesia to solve"-apparently meaning that as far as Vorster is concerned, Smith is free to pursue his own kind of settlement and that South...
