...Skating after an American at an Olympics in the U.S. cannot be the most confidence-boosting experience, especially for a skater from Russia. "Oh, it was so hard to skate after Michelle [Kwan]," said Irina Slutskaya, a favorite in ladies' figure skating. Dodging the love tokens strewn on the ice from Kwan's fans was the least of Slutskaya's worries. Because of the skate order, the 23-year-old Muscovite's performance would determine whether Kwan or Sarah Hughes glided away with gold. Until last week, only real fans of the sport knew the extent to which skate judging can involve intrigue, deceit and shady arithmetic. For them it was just mildly surprising that a flawless performance by the Canadians could get a silver medal while the gold went to a bumpier routine by the Russians. ...which Rogge and Cinquanta announced the dual-medal solution, Cinquanta refused to make public the evidence against Le Gougne or to offer details on just who had pressured her. It was reported that he has received four additional complaints of judging misconduct related to last week's pairs-skating event. One claims that at the Skate Canada Grand Prix in Saskatoon, Sask., last November, Le Gougne was allegedly asked by a Russian judge to vote for the Russian pairs team at the Winter Games...

...marvelous to behold. Two weeks ago there was no predicting that a cauldron supporting a flame represented the melting pot. On Sunday that flame was extinguished, but the spirit of what was accomplished in its realm lives on. The Winter Olympics, once the domain of elites representing ski, skate and toboggan clubs, has been changed forever. What a glorious thing these new Games are. They are Olympian...
