...City Chap. A good many seasons back John Barrymore was helping people dismiss their troubles in a comedy by Winchell Smith called The Fortune Hunter. Charles Dillingham has resuscitated this hardy veteran, set it to music by Jerome Kern, and given Richard ("Skeet") Gallagher the leading role. It is doubtful if Mr. Gallagher will ever be a Barrymore; yet he serves the purpose well enough. It is doubtful if The City Chap will be a sensation; yet it, too, is sufficient for its purpose...
...material as his famous cinema burlesque in the "Follies," but there is much, none the less, to be thankful for. He plays the press agent of a famed actor and rewrites a "sap's" play because he loves the sister. The sap and the sister were played by Skeet Gallagher and Elizabeth Hines, respectively. Mr. Gallagher (no, it's a different one) plays a smooth blond part with a certain amount of contributory laughter. Miss Hines is as gracefully attractive as ever, though it was remarked in the audience that she had lost control entirely of her left...
...instead for the role of comedienne. Her obvious substitute is Florence Hedges, who, in spite of a most vivacious and attractive presence, is relegated to a minor role. Gertrude O'Connor, who takes the part of Ruby Airedale, effectively fulfills her description as "a well-kept grave"; Skeet Gallagher is easily the best actor in the play and handles a majority of the laugh-provoking lines. For the rest, none deserve special mention save the novelty dancers and the three "aged" Tuttles.
