Residents of Kuala Lumpur, both rich and poor, used to congregate by the thou sands each night around long rows of food stalls throughout the city. Many were there for their evening meal of satay (meat roasted on a short skewer of cane and dipped in curry sauce). Others stopped off on their way home for a bowl of soup. In the polyglot capital of Malaysia, this nightly relaxation attracted not only Malays but also citizens of the large Chinese minority and the smaller Indian and Pakistani groups...
Sometimes the demonstrators were armed by inadvertence-as when sanitation men, approached by hippies who offered to help clean up Grant Park, innocently gave them sticks with pointed nails to skewer wastepaper. Some of these sticks were later used as weapons. The most severe police injuries seem to have resulted from accidental ambush. At least a dozen assaults occurred when demonstrators, desperately fleeing a line of advancing police, ducked down one street and up another and unexpectedly encountered either a solitary policeman or a lone squad...
...standard 007 diversion, weapons and women are fondled with equal ardor, though sex is not nearly as important as the inflicting and suffering of physical pain. Indeed, Amis hits an almost pornographic intensity as his Bond gets his eardrums probed with a meat skewer, his septum stimulated by a broom straw, and his frontal lobe pummeled with an incessant and derivative yak about the spiritual union between the tormented and the tormentor. The pedantic sadist is Colonel Sun of the People's Liberation Army of China, who wants to blow up some Russians and then blame the incident...

...satirists are sometimes at a loss to find a really big fat Establishment to skewer. The American college, Big Business, Suburbia and Madison Avenue may still make young men angry, but who is mad at the Episcopal Church? It is not even, like its parent body within the Anglican Communion, Established. Paris Leary, a 32-year-old poet, has rashly ignored all of these considerations in a first novel that invites the reader to share his evident hilarity at High Anglican priests, parishioners and monks at a small college town in upstate New York...
