...Winter Games are to that extent the eccentrics' Games, where athletes jump when they skate, and skate when they ski, and ski when they jump. Apart from the epochal Witt-Thomas confrontation in Calgary in 1988, what many people remember about recent Games are the Jamaican bobsled team, the skier from Senegal, the Taiwanese brothers who formed a bobsled crew and a 24-year- old English plasterer who put on his uniform and became "Eddie the Eagle" Edwards, an almost world-class ski jumper. This year the captain of the U.S. curling team is 55, and his teammates...

...what counts in most Alpine contests. But for a new medal event, moguls skiing, competitors must show plenty of creativity and flair as they snake their way down a 920-ft. course bristling with hip-deep moguls, also known as the Bumps. Judges choose a winner based on a skier's speed and the quality and technique of the competitor's aerials and turns. They're from all parts of the world, and they're always happy to talk about their favorite pursuit to anyone asks. But sadly the chances of seeing your favorite skier in the yard are slim during the winter. The season is short and intense. Both teams train all week long, usually far north where the snow is, after classes. They leave for the weekend Thursday nights to compete and don't come back. Ever. (O.K., they come back...

While the beginner facilities are good, most of Squaw Valley's terrain is geared towards higher level skiing. Once the home of the winter Olympics, Squaw Valley offers a spectacular range of upper intermediate and advanced territory. Runs of the KT-22, Granite Chief, and Headwall lifts...

...slopes themselves are excellent. Sunday River makes a lot of snow, so the only time a skier will encounter icy trails is maybe the first ten or so feet of a black diamond or double black diamond slope. On a windy day, the snow on top of the mountain gets blown off. The trails are always very well covered past that. For a little excitement, many of the trails are only half groomed, leaving moguls for the adventurous skier. White Heat, the double black diamond trail, is a must ski. For the experienced skier. Sunday River also offers some very...
