...spectator-dotted beach south of Cape Canaveral an Air Force crash boat cut through the Atlantic rollers to wave off small craft. Just before lunch missile buffs spotted "the Bird" through binoculars-a slim, distant white finger pointed against the light blue sky. Bubbling clouds of evaporating LOX (liquid oxygen) obscured the Atlas as technicians completed fueling. But by 2:35 p.m. "T-time" (firing time) was close at hand...
...fourth try. Said the President: "Bet the poor kid was crying his eyes out." The Navy was fairly obvious about its yen to get into the strategic bombing business with, but after, the Air Force's Strategic Air Command. In one notable performance, two A3D Sky Warriors (at 41,000 ft., a top speed of over 600 m.p.h.) and two F8U Crusaders (at plus 45,000 ft., an average speed of 650 m.p.h.) made the first carrier-to-carrier transcontinental flight in history, taking off from Bon Homme Richard at sea near San Diego, landing on Sara 60 miles...
...balloon rose almost vertically, swelling toward its full 2,000,000 cu. ft. as the pressure diminished. Kittinger kept reading over the radio an endless succession of instruments, stealing a glance once in a while through one of the six portholes. The sky was turning a darker blue, and Minnesota below him was fading to a featureless grey...
Familiar Shape. Part way up, the radio voice transmitter failed. Kittinger could hear the voices of Stapp and the scientists, but he had to send his reports in slow code. This took nearly all of his time, so he had little time left for sightseeing. The sky grew very dark blue, but he saw no stars or planets. A great shape below looked vaguely familiar. Suddenly he realized that he was seeing the whole of Lake Michigan, 307 miles long...
Duel in the Sky. For all astronomers know, say Morrison and Gold, half of the galaxies may be made of antimatter. They will be pushing their neighbors away by antigravity, but the light that comes from them will reveal nothing unusual about them. Only when galaxies of hostile type happen to collide in spite of anti-gravity will their matter interact violently. This may be happening. Several odd objects deep in space, e.g., the M 87 galaxy, seem to get large amounts of energy from an unknown source. These may be pairs of hostile galaxies, fighting vast duels of annihilation...
