Browne is less adventurous on "Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate." Rather than build metaphor upon metaphor as in the stronger songs on his third album, Late for the Sky, he relies upon one image--the dark and silent gate--throughout the song. The remainder of the lyrics are direct but dull: "The only thing that makes me cry, is the kindness in my baby's eye." And the music functions only as a background motif for Browne's poetry, which isn't really worth spotlighting. Drummer Jeff Porcara could easily be pounding away with one hand tied behind...
...heck! Why not? Speculate this one through the old wisdom machine: God's chosen nation of towering indestructible infernoes blazing to the sky. The land of Milk and Honey and Twelve Foot Citizens. It could never happen in China or the Soviet Union, or any of these other knee-high, submongoloid, blankety-blank satrapies. But only in America. Subway to Freedom. Inventor of Intelligence. Home of Thomas Edison, Rutherford Hays, Popeye The Sailor Manson, Telly Sevalis, Gene Kelly, Huey Long, Richard Ward Day, George C. Patton, James Joyce, Martin Kilson, Endicott Peabody, F.W. Woolworth, and Paul Revere, just to name...
...without pretension, and hardly displace air at all. They read as a shimmer of color, sails in the light. Off the beach, past the rattling leaves of the sea grapes, two ambiguous planes meet: the shallow coastal water, slicked with weed, taking the light like satin; and the pale sky, colored the rinsed blue of a Tiepolo ceiling. A pelican lumbers by, just airborne, printing its ragged prehistoric silhouette on the fabric of the scene. Once again, as for the past two decades, Rauschenberg's art drains back into its source, the world...
...prairies and the plains were once horizon-to-horizon bison. The animals were obliterated partly to feed railroad workers but mostly for sport or to furnish the rich with carriage robes and the novelty of nibbling on buffalo tongue. Great clouds of passenger pigeons were peeled from the sky with shotguns or simply captured by hand on their nightly roosts. The last of the species, once estimated to number 9 billion, died at the Cincinnati...
Winning is neither everything nor the only thing. It is simply better than losing on a Sunday under a high Denver sky. Then Monday comes and everybody, except the football players, has to go back to reality and work...
