The set looked as if it was made very cheaply, but with excellent skill. An upside-down garbage can became a table and the frame for the curtains looked as if it were hammered together the day before. This gave an odd look to the backdrop that matched the oddness of the setting...

In a jumbled kind of way, he manages to honor both obligations, and everyone heads toward the Mexican border and the winding down of McMurtry's beguiling legend. The author's minor characters are sketched with a fine, loose skill; there's an old Indian tracker named Famous Shoes, and a white man who has spent his life roaming the Southwest with a pack of dogs, killing off the region's bears...

...credit for the nonexistent consistency in the movie should go to the director, Thomas Schlamme. It takes a lot of skill to keep a wild actor like Meyers on track--skill which Schlamme obviously lacks. Fortunately for Schlamme, failure can be one of the best lessons. At least he put in some great scenes from San Francisco, complete with long pans of the Golden Gate Bridge...

...sometimes saying something profound but at other times sounding cliched. Instead of making a good delivery of the lyrics, the band makes them seem as if they were bought from a poetry vendor in the Square. And Cop Shoot Cop unfortunately bought just enough cliches so that their musical skill really has to work to make up for them...
