Usage:

...comparative importance of the objects in an art collection ? Your "famed" and Baedecker's asterisks are simply highly condensed symbols for indicating relationships which could not be otherwise indicated without many wasted words. Those readers who know without being told the relative importance of everything, may surely skim over the asterisk or the "famed" with less pique to their vanity than if a longer expression were used. Those who lack the omniscience just referred to (and I am one) should applaud TIME for having created this concise and effective symbol, which is not to my knowledge used in this...
