Burgeois Germany has crumpled before Grosz's terrible pencil, his contemptuous and exact eye. Frequent victims are bull-necked burghers, drunken women with raddled skin and pendulous breasts, fops with snub noses and muskrat mouths, gaunt marble-jawed soldiers, starving children, slatternmouthed old shrews. All are made contemptible, rarely laughable. The pictures look like a child's scrawls, full of scratchy, distracting detail. But critics perceive the basis of sound craftsmanship, understand Grosz's potent European influence. Knowing that satirists usually resemble their favorite object of satire, pupils at the Art Students' League were wondering which...
...Bergman's copious fishing notebooks. Unlike most expert anglers. Author Bergman considers worm-fishing for trout permissible, particularly ! for beginners. He starts his book with a chapter telling how to do it. An expert worm fisherman told him how to bait the hook: " 'Catch hold of the skin at two places . . . so the ends will wiggle. Some fellers claim that the point of the hook showin' scares the fish but that's all wrong.'. . ." When a trout bites, " 'lower the tip of the pole a minute. . . . Now lift the tip up again easy . . . then...
Black Cancer. An especially pernicious form of cancer called melanoma (black tumor) very often starts from an irritated mole. Full-blooded Negroes (black or brown) whose pigment is evenly distributed over their skins have seemed freer from these melanomata. Dr. Rudolph Matas of New Orleans, who in 1896 wrote on "Surgical Peculiarities of the Negro," believed that this was due to the probability that in the Negro pigment production is a normal function of the skin and under well-developed physiological control, whereas in whites pigment is limited to a few scattered areas and its physiological control is poorly developed...
...Lump. A dignified Albino initialed P. P. entered St. Louis' Barnard Free Skin & Cancer Hospital three years ago. His head was thrown back, his shoulders hunched under his ears. He required morphine to dull the aching, burning pain in his head, neck and shoulders. He was, said P. P., 38, single, a farmer. Five years ago he had noticed a small, hard, rounded lump on the back of his neck. It grew to the size of a ripe olive, then rapidly spread, became an open sore. A year ago he had begun to hold his head back, his chin...
Eyelids Mended. When an eyelid is damaged by injury or disease it can be mended satisfactorily by grafting a bit of skin from another lid, from the inner surface of the arm, or from behind the ear. Skin from those places approximates the thickness of an eyelid. Lids thus mended may blink,' wink, close. If his patients insist, Professor Vilray Papin Blair, St. Louis lid-mender, transplants a strip from the eyebrow. Eyelashes from eyebrows usually look straggly. Professor Blair also makes eyebrows with grafts from the scalp. These tailor-made eyebrows require frequent barbering...
