...Juliet in some 1980s T shirt ripper. The reverse is just as emphatically true for most of the young American actresses. Try seeing Laura Dern's superior performance as a hormone-fogged California adolescent in Smooth Talk, for instance, and then envision her in a Victorian corset and long skirt. Fuses blow; imagination does not stretch that far. Dern, for starters, has too much Pacific Ocean salt in her blond hair, and her lanky good looks are too much a matter of knees and shoulders and elbows. She looks as if she should be playing power forward on the UCLA...

...tall and thin and leggy, but she walks with a knock-kneed self-conscious slouch. When she tries to be sexy, the worst of Valley Girl fashion comes out of the closet. Too much hairspray, too many jiggly bangles, plastic colorful earrings, a flairy mini-skirt and a push-up satin halter are the usual attire. All the sleazy guys at Frank's Hamburger Joint--which Connie and her friend prowl by night--think Connie is sexy, but even remembering what it was like to be 15, it's hard to understand why she'd want to hang out with...

...could concentrate on mastering her technique. The effects of these efforts were clear as she moved her torso in and out of body waves with ease, balanced in arabesque without flinching, and seemed to lengthen her arms every time she lifted them. In addition, Manning used the famous white skirt with ruffled edges to her advantage--charging her figure with momentum as she maneuvered rapid figure-eight turns in the last few minutes...

...self-professed personification of faithfulness has to be literally forced into committing Duncan's murder. The witches are quite good; the female portion of the cast (Rebecca Menes, Daniele Schecter, and Sarah Halper) is much more capable than the male. Schecter plays a delightfully sleazy general with leather skirt and riding crop, and ably changes gears to play a maid in the second half. Menes, as Lady Duncan-cum-witch, slinks gracefully around the stage, an able temptress. She should have given the rest of the performers lessons in poise...
