Aloma of the South Seas. Gilda Gray, graduate of barroom dance halls of the Middle West, has made her first picture. She has taken a grass-skirt story of a native girl in love with a visiting American. After various struggles with his girl from America and Aloma's coffee-colored lover, it turns out, miraculously, that she is really a white girl after all. Miss Gray, while no Bernhardt, holds up her end of the acting capably enough. She also shimmies boldly and with emphasis. That, after all, is her life work and the thing she seems...
...Mauna Loa's first eruption in five years. Comparatively little destruction attended it. Few, if any, lives were lost. The lava flowed chiefly south and west from three orifices, demolishing but one village, Hoopuloa (chief remaining centre of grass-skirt dancing), which it buried 50 feet deep. An eastward flow demolished four ranch houses...
...grasp of the firemen, of Mr. and Mrs. Kronk, dashed up the cinder-hot stairs, bent over the baby's crib. Smoke made her eyes dazzle. She could see nothing in the crib. Was it possible that the baby had been carried out after all? Heat licked at her skirt, singed her arms; terrible heat burrowed in her eyesockets. No, there he was; he lay with his head on his quilt, his legs squirming pinkly on his pillow. Great-grandmother Messinger picked him up, carried him out, collapsed into the arms of Mr. Kronk. Last week the Twentieth Century Club...

Once more she leapt in air?Lenglen of the rotogravure sections, idol of a nation. The girl in the cotton dress left the net for the baseline. With a cat-cunning step that seemed a little weary, a little slow, she wove from side to side, forehand, backhand, stroking hard, deftly?but not so hard, not so deftly as a moment before. Lenglen took the next three games. Wills took the seventh, another deuce game...
...Christmas Eve, are the cup, the pipe, and the kiss of "The Three Wise Men", by Jean Dumaux. Perhaps the strangest of all tellings of the old story, very gently, very gravely, very beautifully! Tramps in the night, a lonely barn, a refuge, a man and "the skirt", and a new born babe! Of these the story that every one knows is told, the story that every one knows by heart and in his heart...
