Even if Europe pulls back, the U.S. may be able to pick up the slack. Both presidential candidates support a national carbon cap-and-trade system, similar to that in place in Europe, and Barack Obama has pledged to invest $150 billion in clean tech over 10 years if he's elected President. The recent economic bailout leaves the next Administration with less to spend, but Obama at least thinks green investment will create new industries and jobs that can't be outsourced. He told TIME's Joe Klein that energy will be his No. 1 priority if he enters...

And in this case, well, let's cut a chimp some slack here: Cheeta's screen career, which stretched right up to 1967 (Dr. Dolittle), called for a mastery of physical performance - mime, slapstick, acro- and aerobatics - not of stage English. ...deepening financial mess is another wake-up call, says Scher. It has rained down home foreclosures and other calamities on Florida, slapping the slack-jawed face of a youth cohort that until now had never experienced a downturn. During the extended Florida boom of the past two decades, says Scher, "young people here grew up thinking this state was always flush, always on the upswing. Now there's a sense that something is burning here." Moller says he's seeing more Florida college seniors moving toward the Democrats as a result. "I feel like my dad did when he graduated...
