...Bart's blackboard punishments was to write, "I am not delightfully saucy." But he is, he is--a complex weave of grace, attitude and personality, deplorable and adorable, a very '90s slacker who embodies a century of popular culture and is one of the richest characters in it. One thinks of Chekhov, Celine, Lenny Bruce, little boy lost. Anyway, we love the kid and his endlessly terrific show; so here he is in the TIME...
...Bening, and Friends and Lovers, an indie comedy-drama that finds him playing a ski instructor. Though he must return each night to a rehab center for the next few months, he's been enjoying his newly gained freedom--eating pizza his first night out, shopping for high-fashion slacker duds, catching a matinee of Lost in Space with his four-year-old son Indio (before his sentencing he was separated from wife Deborah Falconer...
Imbruglia (the g is silent), 23, is the most efficient pop product to invade these shores since the Spice Girls. Her voice is girlish but with a captivatingly plaintive edge. She is beguiling both in her initial skepticism and in her loyalty when things start to go bad for the boys...

The cast of characters is eerily reminiscent of a TV sitcom and conveniently created so as to pair-off nicely in the later chapters: meet, for example, pyromaniac slacker Hamilton and his Cover-Girl-to-be sweetheart Pam, "braniac" yearbook editor Wendy and quintessential geek Linus. Coupland gives quick, flashcard snapshots of their individual personalities by showing us their yearbook entries, for example...
