Billy Kidd, 26, the top U.S. skier, went everyone one better. After winning the gold medal for the best overall performance in the downhill, slalom and giant slalom, he announced that he was turning professional. A week later at Verbier, Switzerland, Kidd competed against 39 other pros in a series of races and schussed off with total winnings of $6,500 in what was billed as the first World Professional Skiing Championships.
