Place of honor to Al Capp might have been justified as a depressing example of what our moronic majority feeds on and demands. Instead you appear to deem the pictures artistic, the tortured slapdash stories breathtaking, the primitive jargon and stupid misspellings sidesplitting. You are awed by that $300,000 a year, rather than appalled by the discrepancy between it and the earnings of scientists, researchers, technicians and others of real achievement. It's not your Capp cover and story I object to, it's your enthusiasm over juvenile trash for grownups...

...considered one of the most representative painters of our period." That was faint praise, yet fair enough. Gromaire's art says little that has not been better expressed by older School-of-Paris artists-among them his two favorites, Bonnard and Matisse. But in a field crammed with slapdash imitations of the masters, Gromaire's paintings have an honest, craftsmanlike, and sometimes compelling ring...

This turns out to be the high point of a slapdash Technicolored farce that should try the patience of all but the most ardent Hope fans. The film is a cluttered catchall of mossy gags, pratfalls and comedy routines dating back to Mack Sennett and before. Hope is still the fumbling poltroon, this time a ham actor who masquerades as a gentleman's gentleman in England, then becomes a real valet masquerading in the Wild West as a British earl. He caricatures snobbery and braggadocio, unfailingly spills tea trays all over an English hostess, unwittingly courts death...

...Erie Stanley Gardner, John Dickson Carr, Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler: she lures them into accepting dope-soaked birdseed held out to them by her trained canary, Galli-Curci. The soprano gets in trouble when one of her less celebrated victims unexpectedly dies. Despite its over-cute plot and slapdash style, the tale could count on plenty of readers, since its author was a Met soprano herself, strapping Wagnerian Star Helen Traubel...
