...fact that Packwood was allowed to resign and keep his $88,922 pension, rather than be expelled from the Senate, is insane. In most business environments, the offender would be fired without pension or severance, and possibly face criminal charges. For Packwood, his so-called punishment is merely a slap on the wrist; for the women he harassed, and other victims of sexual harassment, it is a slap in the face. ...rest of the main characters are even more dry and lifeless than Allen. The desire to slap Helena Bonham Carter out of her self-pity is overwhelming, and only increases as the movie progresses. And Michael Rapaport, while likable at first as the "dumb-blond" boxer Allen tries to fix Linda up with, winds up sounding plastic and rehearsed, without a shred of believable character in him. By the trite end, it is clear that you are supposed to be happy for them. But you can't be happy for people you never liked-or even got to know...
...Crimson's stances toward the Progressive Undergraduate Council Coalition, expressed in Patrick Chung's column ("Sloppy Slap Shot," Opinion, September 23) and a staff editorial on September 25, invariably start with a firm reminder of why PUCC's reformist project is necessary. In U.S. society now everyone is a victim, and no one is responsible. Police work, just like every other profession, has its share of questionable people. Where money, power and greed are prevalent, cops, attorneys, bankers, politicians and others will be tempted by the easy...
...surely it would have been insensitive to hold the conference in Brazil, where wife murderers routinely get off with a slap of the hand...or India, where the number of women killed by husbands and in-laws eager to collect a second dowry is more than 6,000 a year and growing...or Bangladesh, where a fatwah remains in force against writer Taslima Nasreen...or Ireland, where divorce is still prohibited no matter how violent and life-threatening the marriage...
