...machinery of the story is simple. One night, drunk and excited at the sight of blood (from a razor slash on one of their wrists), four young men draw numbers from a hat and seemingly in jest agree to kill themselves in order, without revealing the pact or the motive. The four are loners, dependent upon each other in tangled psychological ways. Adler is a fat, ugly and lonely neuter from the Ozarks, who cannot reconcile his hillbilly background with his aspirations in botany and his love of dance and literature. Pless, a young psychologist whose feelings have been frozen...

...reincarnation and the insignificance of individual lives. Manson, who is white, "felt the Establishment was the white man. and his karma was to catch up with everybody and shoot all the pigs he saw for, like, enslaving the Negro. It wasn't wrong to kill the pigs, to slash them down with a knife, because they were destroying the earth." Willy's wife, Marilyn Rohs, 23, had been knifed in the neck, back and abdomen. Although her vocal cords were severed by a knife slash in her throat, Marilyn Rohs had managed to call the police. Five months pregnant, the young woman had been raped twice. Soon after the assault, the baby was born dead. Last week the mother also died...

...looks like TIME, and in places even reads a little like TIME. It feels like TIME, and has about as many pages. There is the red-bordered cover with a slash across one corner, and the usual news sections from ART to WORLD. Actually, it is not TIME at all, but a Harvard Lampoon parody of TIME, the third since 1941. Some 500,000 copies of the Lampoon will go on sale this week across the nation. How to distinguish it from the genuine weekly newsmagazine? It will cost...
