...Amazon rain forest [ENVIRONMENT, Oct. 16], and though I would not deny that human penetration of the rain forest is a major cause of fires, people need to realize that the Amazon is a rich undeveloped area. There are millions of people living in rural Brazil, where slash-and-burn agriculture could be prevented if farmers had economic alternatives.
