...pound or two every year. Because swordfish don't breed until the female is five years old and weighs 150 lbs., we're killing and eating the teenagers before they can reproduce. And though the U.S. is trying, at last, to lead a campaign to stop the slaughter, the effort is too little, too late. Swordfish, like tuna and the other pelagic (open-ocean) fish, roam far from American jurisdiction. There have been reliable reports of commercial fishermen in the Mediterranean routinely landing swordfish weighing between 10 and 15 lbs.--the babies, less than a year...

Many of Bourke's statements are extreme: "For men, combat was the male equivalent of childbirth ...the experience seemed to resemble spiritual enlightenment or sexual eroticism: indeed, slaughter could be likened to an orgasmic, charismatic experience." She supports her position with letters, memoirs, reports and diaries from Australian, American and British soldiers documenting their experiences in both World Wars and Vietnam...

...Hitler's Holocaust? The one lesson taught by that insane carnage is never to forget. If we allow the memory of such a horrific occurrence in Cambodia to fade from global memory, then there is a chance that it will happen again. Almost 2 million people were brutally slaughtered, but we're no closer to knowing why. The only man who could have told us easily, Pol Pot, died in 1998. The world's reaction to Cambodia is appalling. We need to dig deep into this, investigate it, find out why. It will be a black stain on the entire...
