...idea that the government should pay African Americans reparations to compensate for the suffering of their slave ancestors has been kicking around for as long as I can remember. It hit the front pages last week, thanks to David Horowitz, a right-wing commentator with whom I've tangled in the past. Following his familiar MO of attracting publicity by attacking causes espoused by civil rights leaders, Horowitz took out tendentious ads in college newspapers around the country, listing 10 reasons why reparations are "a bad idea for blacks." Predictably, a rumpus ensued on campuses from Duke to Wisconsin...
Early December. At the first great put-up-or-shut-up point, you will slave over the introductory chapter, working to craft the question just perfectly, to balance anecdote and irony in the opening with structure and scholarship throughout. Suddenly, the folk who have been saying, "Oh yeah, I did a bunch over the summer" also are working feverishly, having been told their first chapter draft looked like it had been printed in red ink. In Montenegro and Serbia, several women describe being lined up naked in the hotel room where they were held, in a kind of inspection line for slave shoppers. In Kosovo, women have been warned that if they try to flee they will be identified as Serbs because of their Slavic features and murdered as members of the hated minority...
...have not been thinking about George Washington or Abraham Lincoln over this President's Day weekend. I am not sure that anyone ever does. Car dealers dress up in white powdered wigs to hawk Japanese cars on local TV. What historical commentary there is may have George Washington as slave-owner, and Abe Lincoln as racist. American history seems to have deteriorated in the way that our orchard has, and what we have is not a harvest of heroes, but of shrunken heads. On the other hand, Americans spent $30 million over the weekend to see a movie about Hannibal...
David Anthony Durham draws an impressive moral fable from the history and legends of the American West. Gabriel, 15, has been taken by his mother, a former slave, to Kansas, where his new stepfather is establishing a homestead. The boy is appalled by the chores he sees stretching endlessly ahead of him and eventually manages to run off with a pair of Texas horse dealers who promise to train him in the glamorous cowboy profession. What Gabriel learns quickly enough is that his new mentors are psychopaths embarked on a trail of revenge, rape and murder across the Southwest. When...
