...Overruled is Slaw as his most irrelevant. The mood of the play, and even bits of its plot, is very close to Wilde's Importance of Being, Earnest. Two married couples have gone on trips around the world, but each pair has split itself up and started from opposite directions. The husband from each pair has met and tried to seduce the wife of the other, and they have all wound up in the same hotel in England at the end of their trips. That sounds implausible, but then farce is built on implausibility...

The club sandwiches and the lunch specials will fill you up for under two dollars, including onion rings and French fries and cole slaw--also ketchup, which ZumZum doesn't supply, being strictly German. (Instead they have china pots of mustard cutely labeled "Das Sweet" and "Das Hot".) For supper you can get the usual things, with hot rolls. I tried the filet mignon. Blitman, surrounded by white levis and old tweed jackets, orders a Bartley's Buns 21. The price--$1.10--is steep, but, after all, this is lunch. The Buns 21 boasts two Bartley burgers, two buns, and some scattered potato chips. Accessories include a little paper cup of cole slaw--about one blue plastic forkful--and a pickle. Two pickles if you know Florence. He also orders a large coke for twenty-five cents. Five minutes later, he's done. A ten cent tip for Florence. And don't forget to get a twelve cent box of crackerjacks at the cashier...
