...nearly a third of the play and seasoned it with Japanese costumes and mannerisms. If the production doesn't quite soar, it's probably because the plot remains one of Shakespeare's messiest, with everything from a headless corpse to a guest appearance by the god Jupiter. Matthew Warchus' sleek, modern-dress version of Hamlet toys with the play as well, dropping entire characters (no Fortinbras), tossing in home movies of Hamlet and his father, and setting the early scenes at a swank big-band dance party. The conceit soon loses steam, however, leaving us with a fairly straightforward reading...
Gucci's sexy but sleek designs still press all the fashionistas' buttons, but the firm has been buffeted by other ill winds, from the ongoing trial in Italy of Patrizia Gucci (charged with murdering her ex-spouse Maurizio Gucci, grandson of the company's founder) to worries about the fallout from the Asian financial crisis. Last September, when De Sole announced that profits growth for 1997 would be lower than expected, Gucci stock plummeted almost 20% in one day. The sleek, stripped-down machine, which grabs from the networks whatever programs and files it needs, has attracted early corporate adopters like Saab and Allied Signal. How wide a market it will reach with a price tag north of $700, however, remains to be seen, especially with bare-bones PCs available...
...buzz, a straight play with a chance of becoming a hot ticket. The U.S. cast boasts at least one marquee name--Alan Alda, who plays Marc with a few too many sitcom inflections--along with two solid co-stars, Victor Garber and Alfred Molina. Director Matthew Warchus' sleek, mod production (a white set dominated by three chairs and a coffee table) is essentially the same as the one still drawing nearly full houses in London...
...Mask and Spear Pub and Lounge is a 21-and-over, invitation-only bar. The sleek bar, replete with mirrors, stools and guest book wows visitors. The authentic African masks and spears on the walls inspired the name of the institution. Signs behind the bar list the house drinks and the benefactors of the watering hole; many people have endowed bottles in their name. The lounge encourages friendly chatting among guests...
