Coterie in the Country. As seen in Cleveland, the Yuan period emerges as one of sleek sophistication, technical innovation and fertile alienation. Though the Mongols established peace and reopened trade routes to the West, their court at Peking remained essentially barbaric. They were frank admirers of China's traditional culture and encouraged conservative sculptors to turn out temple and palace art, some of which has been preserved. The Cleveland show includes 15 bronze and wood statues, twelve silver vessels, jade and ivory carvings. Yet for all the emphasis on tradition the period was not stationary. Tremendous strides were made...
Director Christian de Chalonge tells Antonio's story in straightforward documentary style, avoiding dramatic climaxes and resisting all the opportunities for easy sentimentality. The casting is superbly unactorish. Churlish hotel clerks, irritated factory officials and the nurse's sleek young friends making banal conversation about the beauties of Portugal-all look their roles and read their lines without a hint of theatrical emphasis or timing. The Portuguese peasants are clearly not actors at all. but no professional performer could hope to match the direct simplicity of their response to the tragedy that surrounds them. Best...
...most dyed-in-the-silks thoroughbred fans, quarter-horse racing is not horse racing at all. When it comes to purity of breeding, the quarter-horse wins no prizes; a chunky, bandy-legged brute, it looks almost grotesque next to the sleek, stately thoroughbred. Besides, what railbird wants to bother with a race that covers only 350 to 550 yds. and is over before he can focus his binoculars? The answer is the 2,000,000 quarter-horse devotees who showed up at 100 tracks in 26 states last year to watch the husky hybrids dash to photo finish after...
Peter Townshend in performance is a tall sleek figure with jabbing thighs. He whips to his left--slips forward--darts further forward--slams his bent foot down on the stage floor to a chord on the guitar played upward with his hand at the end of a complete circle of his whole arm. He retains complete control of his music though and never seems to miss guitar cues...
...financier's wife is played by a sleek, sweet dream from England named Jacqueline Bisset. Her screen debut in the part originally scheduled for Mia Farrow-before she walked out on the movie and on Sinatra-is one of The Detective's redeeming features. Otherwise, this police epic peters out in aimless diffusion and in some of the most absurd juxtapositions of Manhattan and California location shots ever seen...
