...upholding the cancellation of the gold clauses the sleek attorneys of the railroads joined with the Government. The Government's lawyerlike brief was signed by two of its bright young men, Paul A. Freund, onetime secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis, and John G. Laylin, assistant to General Counsel Herman Oliphant, of the Treasury. But the Government's oral argument was definitely less than lawyerlike. Rather than risk his case in the uncertain hands of his Solicitor General, Attorney General Cummings put on his cutaway, striped trousers and derby and marched to the bar in person. Flanking...
...uncrowned tsar of Monte Carlo, sleek, hard Casino Director René Léon, far more potent than fusty old Prince Louis of Monaco, was under withering fire last week from Monégasques who loudly demanded his scalp. On top of the wallop Depression gave Monte Carlo had come a second staggering blow, the decision of the French Government in 1933 to legalize roulette, hitherto a Monte monopoly, in France. There, when sufficient speed is attained...

Efrem Zimbalist jumped from Florida to Canada last week. Mischa Elman was due to arrive from Europe. Sleek Albert Spalding was in New England. After 25 concerts Bronislaw Hubermann sailed to play in London but he will return in February for a General Motors' broadcast and an engagement with the Philadelphia orchestra. Yehudi Menuhin's dates cram sheets of paper. He played 18 times in Europe...
Since just such a rear-engine car is now in its second year of sleek production by Mercédés, Nazis might well smirk at President Stout's exhortation to the U. S. automotive industry to pull itself together and build likewise. Standardized U. S. cars he found "so alike . . . that a price war has started which eventually must ruin the industry if economic history is right. . . . What is needed at this stage is not so much intellectualism that can design the car, or intelligence that can run the firm, but somebody who is 'smart...
