In a study in the current issue of Biology, researchers report that they've figured out the cause of jet lag: a desynchronization of the internal clocks of two groups of neurons deep in the brain. One group is associated with deep sleep, which results from fatigue; the other is linked with rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep.
