...latest to fall victim to the strangler are the ex-wife (Barbara LeighHunt) and the girl friend (Anna Massey) of a former R.A.F. ace, Richard Blaney (Jon Finch). The screenplay by Anthony Shaffer, author of the Broadway thriller Sleuth, almost too painstakingly builds up the circumstantial evidence that points to the ex-flyer as the killer. After Blaney is in custody he finds out what the audience has known all along: that he has been framed by his good pal Bob (Barry Foster...
Hound's action takes place in a theater on opening night. It is a spoof of an Agatha Christie thriller, and Stoppard handles it with prankish zest, though it lacks the urbane comic polish and spine-prickling tremors that Anthony Shaffer put into his Christie takeoff, Sleuth. The subplot concerns two drama critics who observe and comment on the play and eventually get actively drawn into it at no small risk. Here Stoppard is sly and wry, and one may guess that he views critics with bemused affection and subdued contempt...
...possible forgery. But just as the source of the Nile was an irresistible magnet for 19th century explorers, the sources of the four Gospels that relate the life of Jesus remain irresistible lures to 20th century biblical scholars, and every so often some patient scriptural sleuth turns up another important piece of evidence. He has concluded that a hitherto neglected fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls, written within two decades of the crucifixion...
...doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts. Cosby is not unfamiliar with academic slow starters-in worse days he had to do a rerun of tenth grade. The second bananas are all first-rate, notably Judy Graubart, whose roles include Julia Grownup; Skip Hinnant, the Don Adams-style sleuth, Fargo North; Lee Chamberlin, as Rosalie the fortuneteller; and Morgan Freeman, the elongated Flip Wilson cast both as Easy Reader and a soul-sound disk jockey...
...that, since most of the play's humor is sadly dated in a late fifties-early sixties sort of way (there are jokes about psychoanalysts, coffee bars and Kismet), the play's real interest lies in the fledgling hints it gives of Shaffer's present London and Broadway smash Sleuth. Suffice to say that director Liz Coe has struggled valiantly to keep things moving (though when the blocking finally resorts to sending the actors up and down ladders exhaustion might have legitimately claimed the better part of valor) and Peter Kazaras as the insatiable detective has some bemused fun with...
