...talk about themselves. Isay is the founder of StoryCorps, a national project he founded in 2003 that encourages everyday Americans to share the stories of their lives. Isay has quite a story to tell himself. He's won a MacArthur "Genius" grant, a Guggenheim, five Peabody Awards, and a slew of other broadcasting awards, and has written four books. But he's modest when he talks about his listening project. Each StoryCorps conversation (between two family members or friends) at a StoryCorps location is recorded for free on an audio CD; a second copy is saved at the American Folklife...
...especially at the beginning of the piece. Although the first movement started out rather sluggishly with intonation problems, the orchestra gradually built momentum towards the end. The work finally culminated in a series of strong, majestic (albeit rather brass-heavy) chords. Most are worthy; some feature Oscar-winning actors and directors. And so far, all show how tough it is to turn this war into edifying entertainment...
...hurdle was the Supreme Court, which had begun to challenge the government's extrajudicial detentions and examine potentially corrupt privatization schemes. In July it reinstated Chaudhry, and when the Musharraf-Bhutto deal was announced, the court questioned the general's right to drop a slew of corruption charges against Bhutto and to keep Sharif in exile. In early October, after Musharraf was re-elected President by the Parliament and state assemblies--the opposition parties all boycotted the process--the court began hearing challenges as to whether the vote and Musharraf's candidacy were constitutional. The decision was meant...
