Like Hazelhoff's story, the movie has about it the patchy, shapeless quality of reality. And that's the trouble. Soldier of Orange does not wear its slick, Hollywood style comfortably. All that gloss raises expectations of a more suspenseful narrative, stronger melodramatic payoffs. It is the sort of thing storytellers invent but reality rarely provides; the sort of thing that makes even silly efforts like Force 10 from Navarone or the recent Hanover Street seem mildly exciting. Something simpler, more documentary in manner would have suited Soldier of Orange better. As it stands, the movie is unsatisfying...

...control in the Bay of Campeche, some 500 miles south of the Texas coast. Efforts to cap the gusher by pumping chemicals and steel balls into the well throttled the flow from 4,500 tons a day to 3,000 tons, but failed to stop it. An oil slick 60 to 70 miles long gradually formed around the well and started to creep northward. Part of the slick was turned back off Tampico, Mexico, by a countercurrent. The rest broke down into large flat pancakes, mousselike patches and thin iridescent streamers...

...techniques typical of the age of hype. Localities and larger principalities routinely hire professional publicists and jingle writers to puff up the old image and help sell it like so much soda pop. Provincial self-glorification is both nourished and exported in a growing number of slick regional and city magazines. Moreover, metropolises and counties now go to exorbitant lengths to build spectacular sports arenas, convention centers and cultural palaces, ostensibly to serve the public but also as a form of chest thumping. St. Louis has constructed an enormous and now familiar arch with no clear purpose other than...

...Gillespie, 35, went for a job interview at Essence magazine in 1970 and ended up being hired as managing editor. She took the floundering publication for black women and gave it an audience, ad revenues and an editorial raison d'être. Serious service articles on health and careers replaced slick travel and fashion pieces. One of her big victories: persuading advertisers to use black models in ads for black consumers. "I wanted to show what black women really are: beautiful, courageous and incredibly vital people,' says Gillespie. Born in Rockville Centre, N.Y., and schooled at Lake Forest College, Gillespie...

Carter's first victim was Califano, who was called to the Oval Office Wednesday evening. The President's Georgia Mafia gave Califano good marks for administering HEW, but accused him of being a big-spending liberal, a "slick operator" and "not a team player." Said a Carter aide: "Competence alone is not enough. There has to be loyalty." And not only to Carter; Califano had been at odds with Hamilton Jordan almost from the beginning. Califano has been faulted for not enthusiastically supporting Carter's bill to create a Department of Education separate from HEW. His case also...
