This was good reliable fun when Jean Gabin starred in it (Pépé le Moko, 1937) and when Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr adorned it (Algiers, 1938); it is good fun still. The older versions were slicker moviemaking but took this likable trash more seriously than it is worth. The new version has just about the right easygoing attitude. Peter Lorre can always be counted on. Tony Martin and Yvonne de Carlo, who have never before seemed entirely human, are simple, likable, even believable. Neatest measure of John Berry's sensible directing: the leads...
Michigan's cagey Coach Fritz Crisler was weary of denying that his boys were twice as fast and slicker than a riverboat gambler. To newsmen he confessed sarcastically: "Sure, everyone's a star around here." A few days later, with bands blaring and the first hint of autumn in the air, Crisler's boys took poor Michigan State apart...
...jape that Harry Truman thoroughly enjoys and he joined in with zest. Pollywog Truman cheerfully donned a baker's cap, saw to it that others in his entourage conformed to the prescribed pollywog costume of trousers, loud shirts and ties worn backward.* Margaret wore a shoe-length slicker and sou'wester, which made her look like a Morton Salt boy. She was told to mount watch for Davy Jones, who traditionally appears the day before crossing...
Burnham, the ex-Communist, ex-Trotskyite professor who has recently been canonized by Time-Life, is a shrewder, slicker model of this type (top of his Princeton class, always a sharp dresser); his book is smart, superficially cogent, and therefore the more dangerous. His thesis is that the time is ripe for world empire by one power, and that the inescapable conflict is between Russia and the United States. Borrowing handfuls from historian Arnold Teynbee's arbitrary classification of civilizations (what are the criteria for a civilization?), Burnham sees America as the saviour of Western Civilization from the dynamic surge...
...Another fad: "shorty" coats (known in some stores as "swallow tails"). In Chicago, Marshall Field's offered a shorty specialty which was going like hot cakes among teenagers: a "hot-jive jacket" of yellow plastic with such sharp legends as "Natch" and "Slick Chick" printed on it. The "slicker" days of the twenties were back...
