...smoking jacket, and plastered it all over the newsstands and his DC-9, the rabbit's reputation rested mainly on a swift (wham, bam, thank-you ma'am), productive (litters the year round) procreation. Then Hefner air-brushed its aura and made the rabbit the symbol of his whole slick fantasy world. But when you're inventing fantasy to entertain your children during a long, boring car trip you leave out the details that enrapture the slavering American male. You retrograde modern romance, back to Northrop Frye's original "love and adventure" formula, away from modern "lust and bloodlust...
Synthetic Desperation. Schlesinger and Screenwriter Waldo Salt collaborated previously on Midnight Cowboy, and The Day of the Locust has much the same mood of sentimental surrealism. Both films treat rather bizarre subjects in a comfortably slick fashion, so that nothing becomes very real or threatening. All decadence is decorative, all desperation synthetic. Fighting for Our Lives is filled with moments like that. No one had to hire extras to play sheriffs in Kern and Tulare...
...social elitism that make possible the ascendancy of men like Richard Nixon to the Presidency. That life-style, that environment certainly merit cinematic investigation, but Shampoo hardly does the job. A message is hinted at, but its presentation is so smooth, it is done up in such a slick package, that the attempt to grasp it is about as satisfying as having coitus interrupts with someone covered with suntan lotion...
