Death Wish. This really isn't so terrible. I mean it's obviously terrible what with Charles Bronson and everything, especially the slick director Michael Winner, but "fascism" in the picture can be taken in two ways. As always with movies being as frighteningly manipulative as they are, one identifies with Bronson as he walks the streets shooting muggers, or crowning them with a sock full of rolls of coins--you can't help it. And some can say legitimately that yes this is just about some creep who goes around offing poor people while they make a hero...
...Yukio Mishima had written 40 novels, 18 plays, 20 volumes of short stories and as many books of essays. He was Japan's literary exotic, sometimes mentioned for the Nobel Prize-a slick self-promoter and deliberately flashy vulgarian who redeemed his excesses with a gift that sometimes approached genius. In November 1970 he committed his famous ritual suicide (seppuku) after attempting to incite the Japanese army to a ridiculous uprising in behalf of the country's imperialistic traditions...
Robert A. Jones is disgusted. The walls reverberate, the muzak is obscured in the slick real estate office as Jones sounds off about the do nothing city council: "It's been ten years since anything has happened. They know if they are going to build anything at Kendall Square they have to get some zone changes first and zone changes take a 6-3 count. What good is a 5-4 vote when a 6-3, 7-2 or 8-1 is needed. That's the function of a coalition, isn't it?" Jones, still enjoying his inaugural honeymoon...
...worse place. The Malacca Strait is a key short cut in the "lifeline" route followed by most supertankers on the long voyage from the Persian Gulf to Japan. Japanese officials had just completed a survey of ship traffic through the narrow, heavily traveled waterway. As the slick was spreading, they were meeting with authorities from the Strait nations to discuss the survey and consider new safety regulations for ship traffic. Now they fear that the oil spill may lead to new restrictions on supertankers in the Strait. If that happens, many of the tankers will have to take the much...
...Confederates under the misconception that he is a Union soldier. Family scenes bordering on the mawkish abound, culminating in a sob-happy ending. Cullum holds the rambling show together with a strong stage presence and a robust baritone, but his general manner is a trifle too Broadway-slick for a hornyhanded farmer. Producers invariably say of a musical like this that it will find its audience, and much of Shenandoah is so amiably wholesome that one wishes them luck in finding...
