...great, sunbursty slick-paper prospectus issued last week, the Midnight Sun Broadcasting Co. gave advertisers some idea of the possibilities of the Alaska market. Alaska's bill last year for U. S. merchandise was $42,676,441. Fish cannery equipment and mining machinery were the biggest items. The petroleum bill was $3,505,819; tobacco, $1,061,621. Trouncing big Standard Oil of New Jersey, Socony-Vacuum and three smaller companies with tanker fleets was the task taken on by National Maritime Union's tough, rock-fisted President Joe Curran. From Galveston to Portland his pickets patrolled the docks, laid up 75 slick, oil-toting tubs. Purpose: to persuade the lines to increase wages and prefer union men for jobs. Next day in the doubles, with a fellow...

Manhattan is a cluster of villages, and among the 1,000-odd newspapers and magazines published in Manhattan are some 20 designed for village consumption, to catch the local advertiser's dollar. These range from the snobbish, slick-paper hotel publications of Robert L. Johnson Magazines, Inc. (Waldorf's Promenade, Pierre's Pierrot, etc.) to such modest community sheets as the Tudor City View, London Terrace News, The (Greenwich) Villager. Columbus Circle has its Mid-towner, Radio City its Rockefeller Center Magazine. That...

...Babe Ruth of squash tennis is the New York Athletic Club's 31-year-old Harry Florian Wolf, who has held the so-called national amateur championship for nine years. Last week, on the slick white courts of Manhattan's Harvard Club, Slugger Wolf pasted his way through a bracket of 37 aspirants to his tenth championship, but as far as 99.44% of U. S. sport followers were concerned, he might as well have won the ash-barrel-rolling title...
