...mindful of Seattle's violence, D.C. cops last week shut down the demonstrators' "convergence" point (a warehouse) and came out in force. This time, they faced not dozens but thousands of demonstrators on the barricades, all joined by a feeling that the new world order is really a slick new version of the old one, ruled by Big Money and Big Government. On Saturday night alone, police arrested nearly 600 anti-globalists for "parading without a permit." Thanks in large part to the Internet, which has allowed them to cement their bonds, air their grievances and swell their ranks...
...about it. Right now, Clinton says he doesn't want a pardon if he faces criminal charges. And Al Gore has responded to the issue of pardoning his boss if elected president, a la Gerald Ford, by suggesting Clinton's response makes this a moot point. But the Slick One and the Inventor of the Internet have, at times, been a bit disingenuous. Some were technically slick and others were strikingly raw. Yet each presented a uniquely personal perspective...
...things moving. Ballard is best known as Alanis Morissette's co-writer and producer. The band insists that hiring Ballard was its choice; Ballard says he was recruited by micromanaging Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine. In any case, Dumont admits that he initially thought Ballard was "too slick" for the job. "I won't pretend there wasn't some pressure for them to write with me," says Ballard. "Whatever it took to make sure that they had a, quote, radio single...
