...Vigil. By nightfall five destroyers, two submarines, a frigate and another submarine rescue ship were headed for the spot where Thresher went down. The night searchers found an oil slick. And finally Admiral Anderson came to perhaps the most painful decision of his career. The Navy must begin telling families of the men aboard Thresher that a tragedy may have occurred...
Lillian Hellman, gathers up a Jewish family of toadstools to prove that modern U.S. life is poisonous. In this emetic comedy, Playwright Hellman retches over psychoanalysts, alcoholics, beatniks, sentimental Negrophiles, romanticizers of the American Indian, epicene writers, slick shysters who run homes for the aged, the eel-spined younger generation, the middle-aged materialistic middle class, the hot-and-cold war-babied economy, the affluent society, and-horror of horrors-store-bought bread. This catalogue of latter-day evils presumably calls for the wrath of Jeremiah. Unfortunately, Lillian Hellman only manages to turn bile into bilgewater...

As for the staff, Billy Pierce is 36 and Jack Sanford 34. Each had a peak year in '62 and it would be hubris to assume repeat performances (even though Sanford comes from Wellesley and is highly praised in the Globe...
...Laos arrived in Washington last week. This was the second stop on a tour of 13 of the nations signatory to the Geneva pact last year that guaranteed the "neutrality" of Savang's lethargic little kingdom. The first stop had been Moscow, and the Russians showered gifts, including slick Chaika (Seagull) limousines, on the King and his bland, bowing Laotian entourage. President Kennedy did not exert himself to exceed the Russians: he gave the King a desk set and an autographed photo of himself...
