Then, a long-faced, slight (5 ft. 11 in., 170 lbs.) Air Force second classman from Eureka, Calif, named Richie Mayo took command. Earlier, Quarterback Mayo had been knocked limp by Army linemen, as he desperately retrieved a high center pass and tried to kick on the run. But Mayo got up off the ground, and in the second half, he pulled up the Air Force with him. A daring fourth-down pass put the Air Force on the Army 15. Two plays later, he so artfully faked a hand-off up the middle that the converging Army defense never...

...verve and discretion, though the fare offered was surprisingly light. Perhaps the orchestra's conductor, John Harbison, is thinking of the taxing problems he will face in preparing a Bach cantata for the next program. At any rate, the Haydn symphony (No. 8) performed on Sunday was charming, if slight, and an interesting example of a classical piece with baroque devices still hanging on. "Almost three years ago," said he, "I contracted a bronchitis which finally seems to have developed and become chronic. And so every slight cold has a sort of multiplied effect on me." That is why, he said ironically, "I seek the warm weather and sun." He added that he had the flu before he went to California in October. "I called it flu. Whether the doctor did or not,*I don't think I ever asked him. Anytime...

Last spring, British Mathematicians Raymond A. Lyttleton and Hermann Bondi attributed the expansion of the universe to the presence of thin hydrogen gas between the galaxies, suggesting that the hydrogen atoms may have slight positive charges and therefore push one another apart by electrostatic repulsion (TIME, June 22). A still-later theory comes from Professors Thomas Gold of Cornell and Fred Hoyle of Cambridge. England. Gold and Hoyle also think that the mysterious force comes from intergalactic hydrogen gas, but they argue that its urge to expand comes from high temperature, not from electrical repulsion...
