Because of the visual style he chooses, Hicks is able to retain the novel's dense, multi-tiered flashback structure. Though the screenplay is, for the most part, religiously faithful to the novel, Hicks does take a few very slight liberties with the ending. More cynical viewers may find his alterations maudlin; I found them highly effective--and appropriate, given the film's overall tone...
...time being he has developed a Teflon coating. The biggest threat facing Putin, says Pavlovsky, is dramatically inflated popular expectations. Two and a half months of campaigning, however, allow little chance for Putin's 65% confidence ratings or popular expectations to be significantly deflated. There is also a slight possibility that Putin's views on anything, from economics to defense, will become much clearer in this time. Last week--in what with hindsight seems like a heavy hint that Putin was preparing for greater things--the Russian-government website posted a long and somewhat turgid statement of Putin's beliefs...
Finally, even though the investment banks spewed new dotcoms at a record rate, there is simply not enough supply of these high-growth stocks out there to sate the demand of both the individuals and the institutions that want them. A slight curtailing of the new-issue pipeline, mandated by regulators as a pre-Y2K bug precaution, caused the few Business-to-Business plays out there, like VerticalNet, to soar. Stocks trade as a function of supply and demand, and right now every dotcom is Pokemon at Christmas--only in the case of stocks, the shortage won't be fixed...
...vote for Unity was, in most Russian minds, a vote for Putin. Immediately after last week's results were known, the Prime Minister's aides fanned out among the news bureaus of Moscow, driving home the message that their boss was a shoo-in for the presidency. They admitted slight embarrassment about the wildly biased coverage of the campaign on state TV. But, they maintained, Putin's endorsement of Unity was essential...
...theory of curved space-time was called general relativity to distinguish it from the original theory without gravity, which was now known as special relativity. It was confirmed in spectacular fashion in 1919, when a British expedition to West Africa observed a slight shift in the position of stars near the sun during an eclipse. Their light, as Einstein had predicted, was bent as it passed the sun. Here was direct evidence that space and time are warped, the greatest change in our perception of the arena in which we live since Euclid wrote his Elements about...
