Mills Lane tries desperately not to be an imitation. His show originally planned all kinds of innovations: one case per episode, scenes inside the judge's chambers, footage from the scene of the crime. Most of them were abandoned, however, and the slight changes actually implemented are ineffective. Instead, the show must rely on Lane, who, for an ex-Marine known in his Reno courtroom days as "Maximum Mills," is shockingly sympathetic, if in a flinty way. Lane, 60, is straight shooting without being superior and so honest that he describes his motive for doing the show this...
After all the talk I heard about the inevitable feelings of embarrassment and alienation that accompany a summer home after a year away in the alternate universe of college, I was surprised to find that this summer, once settled, began to feel like any other, with the slight exception that my little brother can now drive and his friends are devoted to making him fashionable. Hopefully, resistance will not be futile...
Injecting a deadly toxin into your face may sound ill advised, but the doses are slight--usually 15 to 60 units, vs. the 3,000 required to kill somebody. In addition to smoothing worry lines, Botox is used to erase crow's feet and furrows between the eyebrows. "By the time somebody consults a lawyer," says Dr. Monte Keen of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City...
Only the insistent use of freeze-frame prevents this from being the most consistently attractive studio release in recent memory. The sense of slow motion is oddly timed, as when a short still interrupts some slight motion, the motion continues for three or four seconds, and then a newspaper photo of the new and different scene is plastered across Foley's vision and the screen. Fortunately, the frequent freeze-frame is less pervasive than the edgy, upbeat score, which adds at least as much to the general geniality of the movie as the cinematography...
...cites an offending item from a long ago Earl Wilson column: "'Would you believe that not once has Joey Bishop sat down to dinner or drinks with Frank Sinatra without being invited?'" The slight isn't that Wilson got it wrong, exactly. What rankles Bishop is Wilson's mocking disbelief. "I'm the comic on the bill. He's having dinner, O.K.? If he wanted me present, he would invite me. How do I know he's not talking business? I knew my place. You people"--journalists--"don't believe the truth...
