...Handel and Haydn Society, self-styled "America's Premier Chorus and Period Orchestra," features many interesting baroque instruments, several of which shone in solos in L'Allegro. A baroque flute, for example, enjoyed a lovely solo and interchange with Saffer in Part I, marred only by slight stumbling in the first few bars. The instrument, though held and played like a modern flute, is of black enamel, and considerably wider in diameter. Also fascinating were the horns, ancestors to the modern French horn, which had no stops and could only be played in the primary overtone series, manipulated...
Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin), currently playing at the Shubert Theatre, is an enjoyable if somewhat slight affair. It mixes laughs with more serious themes, and while this melange of the silly and the sober can sometimes seem forced, on the whole it succeeds admirably in keeping the audience engrossed--making its running time of 90 minutes seem barely...
...dialogue crackles and some characters come across as just plain silly. Jokes are set up in the beginning of the play, and recur later on, in different contexts, to great effect. The comic material Martin uses in Picasso succeeds in racking up the laughs, although it lacks the slight edge that elevated the best of his earlier into something more provocative and exciting. Still, Martin is no comic slouch, and there's never a dull moment during his play...
...cross-casting, which may initially provoke skepticism, turns out to be a fine idea; the women who play the Thanes of Ross and Lennox--Erin Billings '00, in a strong supporting turn, and Mary Pagones, respectively--are, like Voros's Banquo, stolid, sober figures who maintain the dignity and slight aloofness which characterize the statesmen. Dressed in identical black man-tailored suits, the thanes move through the play like almost interchangeable cogs in a state machine; Voros's more personal characterization of Banquo is what makes the character so much missed. Andres Ramos-Nolasco '99 plays a rather flat Duncan...
...singer and guitarist, bassist Gary and drummer Steve start off writing and practicing songs in a shack on the out-skirts of their hometown of Kitty, Virginia. They play their first gigs to tiny crowds in the little bars in Kitty and surrounding areas and slowly build up the slight recognition that could be mislabeled as a following. Just before the beginning of Geniuses of Crack, Mark is approached by an A&R man from a new, alternative record company that wants to sign Bottlecap. The novel opens as they fidget in their seats on a transcontinental flight, destination...
